Building Kakbima for Android, iPhone and iPad

Today we released a new version of Kakbima for Android, iPhone and iPad that’s faster, more reliable, and easier to use than ever before. The development of this new apps signals a shift in how Kakbima is building mobile and tablet products, with a focus on digging deep into individual platforms.

With over 100 businesses accessing the Kakbima platform via web every month, our engineers are dedicated to making the mobile Kakbima experience as fast, reliable and feature-rich as possible.

Having both mobile and tablet apps designed for the most popular web activities allows us to take the best features from each and cross-pollinate with our core Kakbima for Android, iPhone and iPad apps. This however introduces the challenge of deciding which features make the most sense for the core apps and figuring out how to implement them.

By retooling our development process–from making our small development team responsible for each device experience across desktop and mobile, to switching to native code and timed release cycles–we’ve been able to make sure the best of each standalone app is represented in the core app experience.

One product, one team across different platforms

Kakbima has historically had a small, nimble engineering team with separate groups dedicated to desktop and mobile experiences. Within the last few months, our engineering team has taken ownership of the user product experiences across both desktop and our mobile apps. Our engineers know the product, features, and users better than anyone and are sensitive to the nuances of developing and adapting these experiences across multiple platforms.

As a part of this evolution, we have always build micro frontend extensions of every new feature for desktop before porting the same features to the different platforms we currently support. This has allowed us to build, test and iterate new important features faster as we have them rolled out to our users based on demand.

Micro frontends for desktop

Last year our team rebuild the motor and motorcycle policies management modules, providing features that make it easy for an insurance agent, broker, insurer/carrier make different manipulations to their customers’ policies. Several months later, we rebuild the motor and motorcycle claims management modules to provide a seamless claims experience process with transparency collaboration between the customer and different intermediaries.

Building micro frontend modules like policies and claims management enables us to push the envelope with specific features and allow us to get feedback from specific audiences like underwriters, claims adjusters, appraisers, examiners, and investigators. The highly engaged users of these micro frontends are a great proving ground for next-generation features that are refined and tweaked in our web platform before potentially making a debut in the mobile and tablet devices.

Having a single team own the product experience in their micro frontend state as well as the integrated experience in the mobile and tablet devices means that we have more thoughtfully-executed experiences across different platforms.

We can do this kind of fast, adaptive sharing across apps because we’ve retooled our mobile development process with a focus on native code and timed release cycles.

Scaling up with HTML5

As mobile usage exploded over the last few years, our priority has been to ensure that regardless of device, platform, network, or region, Kakbima users have a good experience on their mobile devices. To support thousands of devices and multiple mobile platforms, we have leveraged HTML5 to build and distribute Kakbima mobile experiences across iOS and other platforms.

By allowing us to write once and ship across multiple platforms, HTML5 will allow us to keep the Kakbima mobile experience current and widely available.

The best Kakbima experience, in your pocket

As we continue to develop Kakbima across platforms, we will continue to use our micro frontends approach to push the limits of each module/product/feature and leverage new, battle-tested features to create the best possible core app experiences on every platform. We truly believe mobile is the best platform for Kakbima, and the new Kakbima for iOS is just one of our steps to ensure you have the best Kakbima experience anytime, anywhere.
